Twenty seven species of bee-eaters are known worldwide. With slender bodies, bee-eaters are extremely agile. Often catching flying insects on the wing, bees and wasps are their favourite. Butterflies and cicadas are often given the same treatment as bees and wasps – these are whacked against their perch. Often butterflies lose their wings in the process. Shown here are only six species.
